Where were you at in your music career when you had your first child? Was there much discussion about how that life choice would affect your career within the music/entertainment industry?
We each took a step back from our music careers in order to start our families, knowing it would be a long break.
As a working parent in the music industry, what are some of the biggest challenges you face or have faced?
We can only take jobs when a family member can be home with the kids, as hiring a babysitter every time is not feasible. Additionally, we need to accept that projects will take considerably longer for us. Also, as a working parent in this industry, we need to say no to a lot of opportunities we would love to say yes to. And we have to be ok with that. We have to be patient.
What is one change (big or small) within the industry that could make a positive impact for working parents?
A grant program that offers funding to cover childcare expenses.
How do you find support and community with other working parents in or out of the music industry?
Working Moms in this music industry tend to seek each other out! We truly recognize the unique position we are in, so it's very common for a complete stranger to reach out with words of support and encouragement, and sometimes this turns into a friendship or collaboration. When you are sacrificing precious time with your little ones to pursue your music career, to know that you are not alone makes all the difference in the world.
What’s one specific example of an organization/venue/company doing something great to help support working parents?
Music producer Paul Zacharias of Wheelhouse Sound Studio in High River, Alberta, is 100% cool with recording artists bringing their kids into the studio! Also, two of our songs were recently selected to be featured on the Women of Substance podcast, as part of their Celebrating Motherhood Series.
What could a music event (festival, conference, etc.), do or provide to make it easier for you to participate?
Free camping or hotel accommodation for a whole family, a team of Nannies to spend time with the children while the parents are performing.
Can you shout out another music mama doing great things?
Sonia Deleo, Melyssa Lee, Ainslie Christine!
