Coraline James
Where were you at in your music career when you had your first child? Was there much discussion about how that life choice would affect your career within the music/entertainment industry?
I was still in University. Yes, consideration was given, but at the time I was a classical musician (I do alt folk now), so it made sense to have them young because classical singers often have the peak of their careers in their 30s and 40s (depending on many factors).
As a working parent in the music industry, what are some of the biggest challenges you face or have faced?
The biggest challenge is time. The music industry is demanding and to be a parent and an artist takes pretty much everything I have. I have to sacrifice a lot, especially social connection, to be here. The second is feeling isolated. Very few people, from what I have seen, have kids, so many of my peers can't relate to my experience, both how challenging it is and how beneficial it is.
What is one change (big or small) within the industry that could make a positive impact for working parents?
Valuing music made by different sorts of people.
How do you find support and community with other working parents in or out of the music industry?
I have started to find some recently, it has primarily been through mentorships and working in community oriented spaces. I would like to find more, especially other artists who are parents.
What’s one specific example of an organization/venue/company doing something great to help support working parents?
Folk Music Canada had a peer-to-peer parents group at their last conference.
What could a music event (festival, conference, etc.), do or provide to make it easier for you to participate?
Provide a childcare stipend.
Can you shout out another music mama doing great things?
