Where were you at in your music career when you had your first child? Was there much discussion about how that life choice would affect your career within the music/entertainment industry?

My debut album was released 8 weeks before the birth of my daughter, after production and performing had been put on hold during the pandemic. At that point in time, there was already a lot of uncertainty about the future of the music industry. We knew we wanted to have a family, so it made sense to create her at that time rather than wait to see where music would go. While I anticipated that it would be a huge change with a lot of challenges, nothing really prepares you for parenthood. You find out when you get there.

As a working parent in the music industry, what are some of the biggest challenges you face or have faced?

The opportunities that pay enough to cover childcare, are child friendly, or justify time away from my family, are more challenging to find and obtain.

Managing my time and balancing everything is a constant challenge. I want to enjoy as much time with my daughter and family as possible, and I want to be able to continue to grow as an artist and professional.

Making time to rehabilitate my body and voice has been challenging as well, but I’m finally moving in the right direction and starting to feel like myself again.

What is one change (big or small) within the industry that could make a positive impact for working parents?

More child-friendly/child-safe events and working environments. Better pay for mid-career, professional artists.

How do you find support and community with other working parents in or out of the music industry?

I’ve had a hard time reaching out in the past, especially because I know how busy everyone is. But I’m starting to connect/reconnect with a few peers and it’s giving me some hope and encouragement that I can build my community to support my presence and work as a mother in the music industry.

What’s one specific example of an organization/venue/company doing something great to help support working parents?

Respectfully, I would love to find out! I’m sure they’re out there somewhere.

What could a music event (festival, conference, etc.), do or provide to make it easier for you to participate?

Safe spaces for families and children. Child-friendly lodging. Break-out spaces/activities for children of performers and music workers.

Can you shout out another music mama doing great things?

Mamarudegyal MTHC, MzShellz!
